PRIME hold a webinar on “Smart Meter Rollout 2.0 at UFD: New Procedures and Deployment Strategies” on October 15, 2025, at 11:00 CET, featured  with Naturgy (PRIME member) and presented by Juan Manuel Galan.

In accordance with Spanish Ministerial Order ICT/155/2020, all low-voltage electricity meters must be replaced after a maximum operational life of 15 years from their initial installation. As a result, the Spanish electricity market will begin renewing the smart meter fleet deployed during the first rollout phase starting in 2025.

At UFD, this renewal process will extend through 2035, with an average replacement rate of approximately 400,000 meters per year.

This second rollout introduces a number of challenges that must be addressed to ensure maximum efficiency. Key areas of focus include:

• Assessment of business processes impacted by or contributing to the large-scale deployment of smart meters.
• Redesign of operational workflows to optimize deployment efficiency.
• Development of testing and pilot programs for the new smart meter technology.
• Definition of key performance indicators (KPIs) to effectively monitor and manage the deployment process.
• Enhancements to business systems to support the new smart meter technology and enable efficient deployment execution.
• Design and implementation of a communication strategy targeting customers and other stakeholders to ensure project success.

During this presentation, featured with Andrés Muñoz, Senior Manager at Microchip (PRIME Principal member), attendees explored innovative applications of hybrid communication solutions beyond traditional electrical metering.

PRIME Hybrid leverages the complementary strengths of Power Line Communication (PLC) and Radio Frequency (RF) to enhance the reliability and coverage of existing smart metering deployments. This webinar covered the fundamental principles of this innovative technology, highlighted its potential for smart energy applications beyond traditional smart metering, and presented relevant application examples.

The share of renewable energy in the EU has been increasing significantly for years. Especially in Central and Southern European countries, decentralized generation from photovoltaics and wind power at lower voltage levels is already significant, accounting for more than 60%, and will increase significantly in the coming years.

To manage this growth and the associated volatility, it is necessary to monitor and control both consumption and generation at all levels, including smart metering. However, this requires significantly more bandwidth in communication technologies than has been the case in many applications to date.

Broadband Powerline provides a both cost-effective and technically stable basis for this. This webinar demonstrated which influences must be considered when using BPL technology and why a European standard is necessary from both a safety and cost perspective.
