ITU Approves New World Wide Smart Grid Standards - 21st December, 2011 |
|
| PRIME has been accepted and officially consented as ITU-T Recommendations G.9955 (PHY layer) and G.9956 (Link Layer). The approved ITU NB-PLC family of standards includes three separate and self-contained specifications with PRIME as one of the established and field-proven NB-PLC technologies. Iberdrola has launched an RFP to acquire 1 million smart meters based on the
PRIME powerline communications standard, for deployment between March 2012 and
February 2013 as part of its ambitious plan to deploy 11 million smart meters by
2018.

Semitech Semiconductor has developed a multi-standard OFDM-based power line communications (PLC) transceiver that can operate in a wide range of noise-prone smart-grid environments, while addressing a multitude of established and evolving standards and proprietary modes. Dubbed SM2400, Semitech's latest device is an OFDM-based N-PLC modem that combines a PHY, MAC, and mixed-signal components. It features a programmable architecture by using two 32-bit cores configured specifically for N-PLC modulations and protocols. It supports all common OFDM-based standards, including IEEE 1901.2, G3-PLC, and PRIME.
