HC Energía is a business group belonging to EDP-Energías de Portugal S. A., Sucursal en España, which is the majority shareholder with a 96.6% participation, the rest of the capital belong to Caja de Ahorros de Asturias (3.14%). The parent company is Hidroeléctrica del Cantábrico S. A., headquartered in Oviedo, Asturias.
The network of companies which are HC Energía is mainly engaged to production, distribution, transportation and marketing of electricity, also providing technical services for the saving and diversification.
This diversification also materializes the majority (95%) in Grupo Naturgas (for gas business development), and a smaller (15.5%) in EDP Renovables (development of wind generation).
The origin of HC Energía dates back to 1920 with the establishment of the Sociedad Anónima Hidroeléctrica del Cantábrico – Saltos de Agua de Somiedo. Since then, it has been a reference for region’s energy, where currently holds a raw power to generate electricity in excess of 2,800 MW, and over 21,000 miles of distribution lines to customers demand. In this way, almost 88% of supplies in the region and 90% of total energy demand in Asturias are responsibility of the Group.
Since 1998, which started the liberalization of the electricity sector has been expanding its reach throughout the Spanish territory, both by opening new sales offices and with the construction and acquisition of power generation and distribution.
